Friends, it has been 11 (yes, 11!) months since I had my hair cut. There was a time when I wanted to grow it out a couple of inches, but that time came and went about 6 months ago. As winter settled in, though, we got cooped up inside, which made the kids clingy and all-consuming, and as the months wore on, I lost myself in the fray. I became so immersed in my role as a mom, that I forgot to take care of me; and, along the way, my hair grew longer and longer.
Completely exhausted and emotionally drained, I met with our family counselor this weekend, and she reminded me how important it is to take care of myself. She asked me if I could do one thing for myself what would it be? I didn’t even pause. “Get a hair cut!” popped right out of my mouth! My husband jumped at the opportunity to help, and watched the kids while I booked and went to a hair appointment later that day. And, friends, it was amazing! I was greeted at the door by a lovely receptionist who brought me a bottle of water and hung my coat for me. My hairstylist was sweet, thoughtful, and gave me a head massage followed by the best hair cut I’ve ever had! It felt so freeing to treat myself to a little relaxation and self care. I truly came home feeling like a different woman than I had earlier that day.
Fellow mamas, I know how busy you are, how selfless you are, how tirelessly you work to love and care for your precious children, and I applaud you for everything you do for your family. They need you and you are doing an amazing job! I also know how easy it is to lose yourself in the daily duties of being a mom. So, here is my invitation to you today: do something just for you. Whether it’s grabbing your favorite cup of joe (yes, drive thru counts!), calling a girlfriend who encourages you, treating yourself to a little pampering, or just taking a moment to breathe deeply. Whatever would bring you peace today – do it and enjoy it!
And, to make things even more fun, take a before and after shot and see the joyful change caring for yourself brings! I promise, you won’t be disappointed :)
